The House of Canmore

Contemplating History…

   The House of Canmore

When Robert was young Alexander III was king
Scotland was at peace
With the security and wealth that can bring

The house of Canmore had ruled for some two hundred years
But without an heir in sight this line might cease
Robert the Competitor had been chosen to steer

As King Alexander’s father’s successor
To the crown
But when that king remarried under pressure

Alexander was born as the royal heir
Now he also cast around
For candidates but he too remarried fair

Lusty as he was
The realm expected heirs soon
But the kingdom’s hope vanished one day because

Of King Alexander’s penchant to do as he’d wish
On a whim he rode out from Edinburgh.   On a night dark with no moon
Riding the coast road in a storm’s howling hiss

Fell from the cliffs to his doom

They Have Wrung

Celebrating Life…

   They Have Wrung

Two warriors make a pair
And together will face the challenges to come
And oh there will be stories to be told before they are done
Of the great things they’ll dare

And now on this boldest
And most very important of all
Adventures they have readied themselves to embark

Thru the journey and years ahead they’ll encounter days so dark
They and others might be certain that they will fall
But I say that they’ll meet the test

How could they not? One so sturdy and one so fair
Two warriors and lovers both tested. From the fates they have wrung
Glories of battle and love’s tenderness have brung
Them to dare

He Strides Yet

Noble spirits come in all shapes and sizes…

       He Strides Yet

He strides yet
In an ambling sort of way
Present in the footsteps of all those he’s shown the way
His calm let

Them see
The way back from being lost
His balance remains a beacon that will hold

Others on course long after his story has been told
His quiet leadership has become embossed
On the culture as his legacy

He strides yet
Across this country’s landscape remembered every day
An icon some would say
And beloved pet

Bridges Don’t Fall Down

Regarding Responsibility…

       Bridges Don’t Fall Down

Bridges don’t fall down
Not here in the U.S.A.
What can those in government possibly say
Though this make them frown

Well good
They should look at themselves hard
And should not in the least think to spare the rod

Upon themselves while thinking of those upon whom they have trod
Our officials should not be free to discard
Those that have withstood

Neglect or the rising of the ground
But the earth didn’t rise and this isn’t gray
It was neglect that led to this calamitous day
In a land where bridges don’t fall down
